St George’s Home for Girls is a registered Child and Youth Care Centre with the Dept: Social Development. In fact, it is currently the only residential care facility in the Wynberg District which provides for girls between the ages of 3 and 18 who are abused, abandoned, neglected and orphaned. Children from failed foster placements and those with behavioural problems are also cared for. We also care for children infected and affected by HIV/Aids
By providing specialised care and education and teaching life skills to the girls within a secure environment, Child & Youth Care Workers empower them with the necessary skills and knowledge to become confident individuals. Equipped with these vital tools the girls are eventually able to leave the home and make a positive contribution to society.
In order to nurture the children, the home strives to provide an environment that closely resembles a warm, loving and caring family home. The forty girls between the ages of three and eighteen each in the care of qualified Child & Youth Care Workers. Therapeutic care is provided by a registered Social Worker with the Child Care Workers assisting.
The girls come from various backgrounds and communities. Different reasons for being placed with us, some of which are from single parent families where unemployment, alcohol or drug abuse is prevalent. Some are neglected and abused, either sexually, physically or emotionally. Some are at-risk because of poor parental control, emotional or physical deprivation.
We offer the least restrictive yet most empowering setting for these children. They are all placed with us by the children’s court, because of the inadequacy of or a complete breakdown in the primary care environment. It is a home-away-from-home for children from various communities and we run the following programs for our children, youth and their families. The Residential Care Program is a vital component of the successful running of our other programs.
